Memorial Day blog

Memorial Day is a day dedicated to remembering the lives lost while serving in the military. First called Decoration Day, this holiday was established after the Civil War to decorate graves with flowers. The Catholic Cemeteries Association takes pride in honoring those who gave their lives in service, and we respect the contributions they made to our country. We are proud to have many Medal of Honor recipients buried here at our cemeteries; with two even buried  next to each other at Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland. Some of these Medal of Honor recipiants include Frank J. Petrarca, William Foster, and John R. Towle.

A Memorial Day Prayer

“O God, by whose mercy the faithful departed find rest, look kindly on your departed veterans who gave their lives in the service of their country. Grant that through the passion, death, and resurrection of your Son they may share in the joy of your heavenly kingdom and rejoice in you with your saints forever. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

My dad is buried at Calvary cemetery and is a veteran from the Korean War and did not get a flag at his grave. His name is Robert Zima. It is the second Memorial Day weekend that he was overlooked. It made my mom sad.

      Hi Bernadette,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear that you and your mother were upset. Flag placement is done by certain military groups and family members. However, the Catholic Cemeteries Association offers free flags for families to place at grave sites. You can find these at our offices in the days preceding Memorial Day. We hope this helps, and please know that we are very honored to care for veterans such as your father. If you have further questions or concerns, please call 216-641-7575. Thank you and have a blessed day.
