Recently, an unexpected situation reminded us of the responsibility we hold at the Catholic Cemeteries Association. A dedicated member of our administrative team at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brook Park shared a story about her husband, who works at a public storage facility, discovering cremated remains. While cleaning out units that had been abandoned, he found the cremated remains of three individuals, left behind and seemingly forgotten.
Efforts to contact the unit renter were unsuccessful, leaving these individuals’ remains without a claimant or a clear future. Faced with the somber reality that these remains had been abandoned without care or consideration, we felt a deep commitment to ensuring that these souls are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
After consulting with Andrej Lah, Director of Cemeteries, we made a decision that aligns with our mission. We decided to inter the cremated remains in a cremation grave at Holy Cross. This act of mercy not only ensures that these individuals are not forgotten but also reflects our belief in the sanctity of every life.
To commemorate their lives, we are also creating a flush marker. This marker will serve as a lasting tribute to their memory, a testament that in our community, no life is without significance, no matter the circumstances.
This heartbreaking situation reminds us of the unexpected ways in which we are called to serve. It underscores our commitment to upholding the dignity of the deceased and offering solace and respect to every soul entrusted to our care. Even in death, the bonds of community and compassion hold strong, ensuring that no one is truly forgotten.
Their names are etched not just on a marker, but in the collective heart of our community, reaffirming our commitment to honor every life, no matter how they come into our care.
This act of burying remains is more than a fulfillment of duty; it is a reaffirmation of our faith and deep-held belief in the Corporal Work of Mercy to bury the dead and that every person deserves a final resting place marked by love and remembrance. We are grateful for the opportunity to extend this sacred service and ensure that these individuals, once abandoned, are now remembered and respected.
