Calvary Cemetery in Lorain has stood as a place of remembrance, reflection, and peace. For many in the surrounding neighborhood, it’s more than a resting place. It’s where loved ones are visited, stories are shared, and grief gently gives way to healing.
When a makeshift bridge leading into the cemetery was removed due to safety concerns, the response from the community was immediate and passionate.

Though never officially built or approved by the Catholic Cemeteries Association (CCA), the bridge had become a familiar pathway for nearby residents. It offered quick access to gravesites and had quietly served the area for years. However, upon inspection, the structure was found to be unsafe, prompting the CCA to remove it in the interest of public safety.
“We understand how important accessibility is for families visiting their loved ones,” said a representative from the cemetery. “Our first concern was safety, but we also listened when the community reached out.”
Shortly after its removal, the CCA received numerous calls and emails from neighbors concerned about losing their direct access to the cemetery. Instead of dismissing these concerns, the CCA listened.
What followed was a meaningful collaboration between the City of Lorain and the Catholic Cemeteries Association, one that reflected not only the community’s deep love for the cemetery, but also the CCA’s commitment to compassion and care.
The residents built a new, structurally sound bridge that restored safe access to the cemetery while honoring the needs of nearby families with permission from the City of Lorain.

This wasn’t just about replacing a bridge; it was about honoring the grief journey. This new access point not only meets modern safety standards but also honors the emotional and spiritual connection families have with the cemetery.
The new bridge now stands as a symbol of compromise, care, and community. It reflects the CCA’s commitment to not only maintaining beautiful, safe cemeteries but also to building trust and lasting relationships with the families we serve.
