Few songs capture the enduring power of love in the face of loss quite like “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion. Known worldwide as the theme from Titanic, the song has taken on a life of its own beyond the film, becoming an anthem for those who grieve yet continue to carry their loved ones in their hearts.

The lyrics speak directly to the ache of separation: “Near, far, wherever you are, I believe that the heart does go on.” For anyone who has lost someone close, these words echo the truth that love does not end with death. The bond we share with those we love lives on, transcending distance, time, and even mortality.

Grief often feels like a storm—sudden, overwhelming, and disorienting. In that storm, this song reminds us of the strength love provides. “Love can touch us one time, and last for a lifetime.” These words point us to something Catholics hold dear: love is eternal because God Himself is love. When we love, we touch eternity. When we remember those who have passed, we are reminded that their lives have left an indelible mark on our own.

For Catholics, this song can also be heard as an echo of the hope we profess in eternal life. Just as the refrain assures, “You’re here in my heart, and my heart will go on and on,” our faith tells us that we remain united with our loved ones through the Communion of Saints. Though they may no longer walk beside us in this world, they remain close in spirit, and we hold hope in the promise of reunion in God’s presence.

It is no wonder that “My Heart Will Go On” has become a song of comfort at memorials and funerals. Its message is one of resilience—that even in the face of great sorrow, we can carry forward the memory, the love, and the presence of those who have shaped our lives.

When grief feels heavy, this song reminds us that love outlasts death. And as people of faith, we find comfort in knowing that this love, carried in our hearts, is also held in the heart of God—eternal, unshakable, and unending.
