Losing a parent, whether as a child, teenager, or adult, changes how you see the world every day. Paul Rudd, renowned for his role as Antman in the Marvel Universe, expressed his thoughts on losing a parent: “When you lose a parent, the world is off its axis and never rights itself. You either adapt or perish.” His words help us understand how deeply losing a parent affects us and the need to find a way to keep going.

At the Catholic Cemeteries Association, we often see individuals dealing with the loss of a parent. Paul Rudd’s description of the world being “off its axis” truly shows what this loss feels like. The death of a parent can make everything feel uncertain because we’ve lost someone who was always there for us.

Adapting to life without a parent means finding a new normal. It’s not about forgetting them or the love you had; it’s about figuring out how to move forward while keeping their memory alive. This might mean thinking differently about who we are and how we relate to others now that our loved one is gone.

Our faith can be a big comfort during tough times like these. The Catholic faith tells us that our loved ones are in a peaceful place with God, free from pain. This can give us some peace of mind and hope.

We encourage everyone who is grieving to lean on their faith and connect with others. Going to church, praying for your loved one, and being around other people can really help. Also, visiting the cemetery can be a special way to feel close to the parent you’ve lost, offering prayers and remembering good times.

It’s also helpful to keep a connection with the parent you’ve lost. You might keep their memory alive by doing something big in their honor, remembering special days, or just telling stories about them. These actions help us heal by changing our relationship with them from one of presence to one of memory.

Paul Rudd’s openness about his loss reminds us that while the pain of losing a parent changes us, it also challenges us to find new strength and keep living in a way that honors their memory.

Word of the Month- Enough CCAirwaves

Send us Fan MailWe come back to our Word of the Month series with a simple word that fights perfectionism and guilt: enough. We talk about how “not enough” shows up in productivity, grief, and faith, and how grace lets us begin again without keeping score. Throughout September, I want to challenge all of us, including myself, to pay attention to how often we use the word enough against ourselves. Do you have a topic you'd like us to discuss?
